IOWA
! I grew up in rural
Northwest Iowa
- Royal to be exact - and it is a great place to grow up. We had the
freedom of riding our bike all over town with no worries-not even
our parents had to worry, because everyone knew who you were.
I graduated from Clay Central Everly, a small high school
that allowed us to participate in extra curricular activities that I
wanted. It gave me the opportunity to find out who I was and who I
wanted to be. As a high school student I was not fond of the small
town living as many high school students think, so I traveled to the
other side of the state to attend
Kirkwood
Community College
for two years. After
Kirkwood I went to the University of Iowa for a year and moved on to
Iowa State University where I found myself walking across the stage
to receive my diploma and thinking what a great state I was in!
Someone
once asked me, “Why did you end up at
Iowa
State
?” I thought and thought, but I found myself always going back to
how the people at
Iowa
State
were like the people I grew up around. They worked hard and knew how
to have a great time! I believe that is why I am here in
Iowa
, because Iowa Culture has a great work ethic, we like to indulge
ourselves with friends and family, and live up the arts and
entertainment scene. Yet we know how to take life at a slower pace.
I am back in
Northwest Iowa
. I am married to a Northwest Iowa native and we feel there is
nowhere better to raise a family than right here in
IOWA
! We enjoy
getting up to go to work and trying to make a difference by getting
young people to come to our area to live, work and play.
This is a great place to do all three!

Generation Iowa
Web Site Launched

GenerationIowa.com,
a web site that state officials hope will serve as "a one-stop
web site for everything young Iowa," was launched Friday. The
announcement in Ames was part of a monthly Generation Iowa
Commission meeting at Iowa State University.
"Today, we are launching GenerationIowa.com, and for the very
first time, everything young Iowans want will be in one spot,"
said IDED Director Mike Tramontina, in a statement. "Young
people will be able to connect to Iowa events, recreation, careers
and each other."
GenerationIowa.com offers social networking, career advice, job
search databases, links to upcoming events, festivals and young
professionals groups, the latest Iowa news and more. The site also
will encourage young Iowans to submit photos, upload videos and tell
their own Iowa stories.
In its 2008 Road Map to Recruit and Retain Young People to Iowa
report, the Generation Iowa Commission urged the state to
"coordinate all social events and career opportunities in Iowa
through a unified, statewide web site for young Iowans." The
report also found that a super-majority of young Iowans are actively
involved in social networking web sites and are more likely to
search for information online.
The Generation Iowa Commission was created in April 2007 when Gov. Chet
Culver signed the "Generation Iowa" bill into law. The
commission, composed of 15 young Iowans ages 18 to 35, was
established to advise and assist in the retention and attraction of
young adults to Iowa.
