Young Professionals of Iowa

Amanda Hess

Amanda Hess lives and works in the Quad Cities, a community of more than four cities including Davenport and Bettendorf in Iowa and Rock Island, Moline, East Moline and Silvis in Illinois. Residents often joke about their counting abilities because the metro area extends beyond the four largest cities. Amanda is the Director of Donor Resources for the Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center.  The Blood Center is an independent not-for-profit organization that collects voluntary blood donations and provides life-saving resources to more than 53 local hospitals in 45 counties throughout Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin and Missouri (visit www.bloodcenter.org for more).  She enjoys spending time with her husband, chocolate lab (Lila) and extended family.  Her interests include volunteer work through the American Heart Association, Midcoast Fine Arts, The Network: Quad City Young Professionals, The Quad City Health Initiative, local Chambers of Commerce, United Way and YPIowa.  One of the best things about her life in the Midwest is the friends, neighbors and co-workers.  The quality of life is unbeatable and includes low cost of living, a variety of entertainment options, extensive networking opportunities and ongoing education options.

Amanda has been a driving force in connecting young professionals with service leadership and career opportunities. This experience is lending value to the newest of her endeavors as the Chairperson for the YP Iowa Ambassador Program designed to help attract and retain YPs to Iowa via career-focused networking.  As a former Board Member for DavenportOne Chamber of Commerce and past Chairwoman for The Network: QC Young Professionals, Amanda feels empowered to help the community and the state of Iowa achieve its growth objectives.  Much work has yet to be accomplished but it will likely be YPs leading the way to that bright future.

Inspiration

Feb 9, 2009

Have you ever wondered why ‘old sayings’ and famous quotes have been around so long?  It’s because they are most often true and easy to remember.  As a collector of inspirational quotes, here are some of my favorites.

"You make a living by what you get. You make a life by what you give." -Winston Churchill

“Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind.” – Dr. Seuss

"Most of the important things in the world have been accomplished by people who have kept on trying when there seemed to be no help at all." - Dale Carnegie

“Volunteers don't get paid not because they are worthless but because they are priceless.” - Sherry Anderson

"There’s a difference between interest and commitment. When you’re interested in something, you do it only when it’s convenient. When you’re committed to something, you accept no excuses; only results."
-Kenneth Blanchard
