Young Professionals of Iowa

Kori Heuss

From an Ames perspective

Kori Heuss is a long time resident of Iowa.  She is Vice President of Heuss Printing and President of Young Professionals of Iowa in 2009.  Rather than providing a list of accomplishments, it is fun to get to know someone in an unusual way for a bio.  Here are 10 random facts.

1.  When I was 6, my ultimate dream was to grow up and be a trapeze artist.
2.  I was a flight attendant for a little less than a year.  That provided me with a lifetime of stories.
3.  Today, I had Milk Duds for breakfast.
4.  My sister is a vegetarian.  I got her bacon flavored dental floss for Christmas.
5.  If I could only have one seasoning for the rest of my life, I'd pick garlic.
6.  I own enough shower gel to shower twice daily. . . .for six years.
7.  I lived without a TV for a year.
8.  One of the things on my life's to do list is to see a 3D movie.  Sometimes I have simple goals.
9.  I can sing all the states in the US, alphabetically because of a song I learned in 6th grade.
10.  Sometimes when I get nervous, I still chew on my fingernails.

You said

May 28, 2009

My grandmother, Myrna, came over to gril steaks on memorial day.  She is 92 and sharp as Wolverine's nails.  On the way to the backyard she paused and said "You have THREE cats now?  That's too many cats."  I said I know, but that my neighbor's kitten moved in under my deck and that my neighbor didn't want the cat anymore so it eventually made the transition into my house.  She said.  "Your house is going to smell".  I explained that my cats do not pee on the floor or anywhere else except the litter box for that matter.  She said "Can't you just drop that one there off somewhere?".  I hugged her.  The addition of this kitten means that I have four animals now, three cats and a dog.  The thing is, I say yes.  My neighbor asks me about a cat, and I say yes.  I can't help it.  I'm not good at no's.  And, I think my life is better because of it.  I never know what is around the corner in my life.  I tend to just go with it and sometimes I surprise myself.  I have discovered that I can take care of four animals.  I can finish a marathon.  I can risk everything I own to purchase my own business.  That's not saying I don't have my moments.  Sometimes I get tired of vacuuming daily.  At mile 22 of a marathon, I think that signing up was a pretty stupid idea.  And, when I can't sleep at night because I'm thinking about my company's financials I wonder if it's the right decision.  But, I wouldn't be happy if I didn't do these things.  I like the challenge.

One of the things I really love about young professionals is that you often say yes too!  In our communities, in our state, it is amazing what a few people who say yes can accomplish.  I don't necessarily mean headline producing things.  Some of you say yes to your children when they ask for an ice cream cone in the park.  Some of you say yes to running for city council.  Either one of those things has the potential to change the world.  Isn't that cool?  Sometimes we have to say no.  But today, I'm going to say yes to people.  The choices we make can do amazing things.  Post back to this blog. . .I want to see what you said yes to today!!!
